South Carolina Caterpillar Dealer Supports Career Day

April 16, 2010 Posted in Community News

Friday, March 26, 2010 ~ In a fantastic display of teamwork, South Carolina Caterpillar Dealer Blanchard Machinery Company and Core Component’s manufacturing facility Precision Pin Products in Sumter, South Carolina worked together to support a very special Career Day for R.E. Davis Elementary School.

R.E. Davis Guidance Counselor, Dr. Jacquemar Law came up with a unique idea to help capture the student’s attention while conveying the message to “stay in school” and “graduate”! Her idea was to focus career day around vehicles that represented different careers. For example, a fire truck represents a career as a firefighter, a police car represents a career in law enforcement and an ambulance represents a career in medicine.

To represent skilled trades and manufacturing, Blanchard Machinery Company provided a very special Muilti-Terrain Loader that had been detailed with custom graphics representing the University of South Carolina.

Career Day was structured so that the students ranging from K-5th grade could learn about various careers during presentations in the gym and then see who those careers are applied by visiting the vehicles that were arranged just outside the gym’s exit. Presenters at both stations were available to talk about careers and to answer questions about the vehicles.

As part of the presentation, Sumter Employee Training Analyst Kurt Welday asked the children what they wanted to be when they graduated. One child said, “police man”, another said, “fireman”, all the while a little boy in the front row was so excited that he could hardly contain himself. Kurt asked the boy what he would like to be after he graduated and he immediately shouted “Spider Man”!
